Houston Area Women’s Center helps individuals affected domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives forward.  Funds raised for this event will support the Center’s 24-hour hotlines, offering a lifeline to those suffering from abuse or recovering from sexual assault.  They also fund individual and group counseling sessions that help survivors move forward with their lives. They ensure that women and children escaping violent homes have a safe place to sleep, and so much more.

Join us for the 23rd edition of the museum’s longest-running film festival
from February 4-6, 2016.  The Museum is honored by the presence of actress Fatemeh Motamed Arya.  She is scheduled to attend a rare, Tuesday-night screening on February 2nd, accompanied by her husband, actor Ahmad Hamed.  Another highlight of this year’s festival is a new documentary about artist Monir Shahroudy Farmfarmaian.

Movies will be screening at the MFAH, Asia Society Texas Center and Rice Cinema.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the following Iranian American organizations are joining hands to offer two opportunities to give back to the Houstonians in need. Our Community is grateful to have a home away from its ancestral homeland, and cares for the less fortunate members of our beloved city.

Items accepted for Donation to “Search Homeless Services”

Monetary Donation: Write your check directly to “SEARCH HOMELESS SERVICES” and a tax receipt will be mailed to you by them.
Canned Food Drive: Canned Meats & Fish, Hearty Soups, Juices, Cereal, Applesauce, Crackers, Beef Jerky, Powdered Milk, and Granola Bars.
Clothing Drive: Unused or gently used clothing (washed and ironed) for men/ women and children (Jackets, Sweaters and new Socks are preferred).
Hygiene Drive: Toothbrushes, Razors, Shaving Cream, Deodorants, Body Soap, Shampoo/ Conditioners, Hand Sanitizer and Feminine Hygiene Products.
Toys: New and gently used items.

CITY WIDE CLUB (Thanksgiving Day): Opportunity to volunteer at the CITY WIDE CLUB’s 34th ANNUAL THANKSGIVING BIG FEAST at the George R. Brown Convention Center on the morning of Thanksgiving Day (November 22, 2012). Every year volunteers serve over 35,000 traditional meals to families on Thanksgiving. Volunteers will receive a free “Persian Thanks Giving” T-shirt. Certificate of attendance provided for students. For more information, visit citywideclub.com.

The 2012 Houston Cinema Arts Festival takes place November 7-11, 2012 and will showcase films by, and about, the visual, performing, and literary arts.
The Festival presents a variety of films and documentaries from around the world.

Going Up The Stairs: Portrait of an Unlikely Iranian Artist


Documentary. Directed by Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami. Run time: 52 min. In Persian and French with English subtitles.

Akram, an illiterate 50-year-old Iranian woman, became a painter unexpectedly, and produced an explosion of powerful, personal and colorful paintings. When she finally tells her Western-educated children about her work, they arrange for her to have an exhibition in Paris. This screening is part of the Festival’s celebration of the 40th anniversary of Women Make Movies.
